Ripped Toons by Marty Volpe

Soft launch

Ripped Toons Comics

Rip and the Ripped Toons

Rip is an iguana, and he has been the star of Marty Volpe's hand-inked underground comix since 1991. The line on the books is Ripped Toons Comics.

Who draws Rip

Every comic and every piece of art on this site is by Marty Volpe. Marty has been drawing Rip since 1991. Rip is the face of Ripped Toons, and Marty is the hand behind him.

How the books get made

Marty draws each cover and its panels on a single sheet. The sheet is copied, cut, folded, and stapled by hand. Donna staples the comics and ships the handmade books with him. Many of the older books were printed in runs of about 20 copies, some on leftover colored paper and some on cardstock.

Fake ads and a secret alphabet

Flip a Ripped Toons book over and the back cover is usually an ad for something that does not exist. Marty also made up his own alphabet, called Ripinese, and you can see it on the lettering pages and the Ripinese decoder wheel.

Originals and remasters

The original books sit next to cleaned up remasters in the comics catalog, so you can compare the two. See originals and remasters
